Tree View Drive was built around a concept of nostalgia and yearning for days past.  The name was originally derived from the former street, Treeview Drive, were Singer/songwriter Josh Manes grew up.  Located in small town suburban New York, "this was the place where i felt centered, emotionally and creatively," said Manes.  In these early years Josh learned to play the drums, bass, and guitar, along with a passion to write poetry and short stories.  When he was 17, he moved away from home and hasn't lived there since.  After playing in various bands in st. louis, he moved to Miami in the summer of 2004 to study architecture.  "I always saw patterns between architecture and music.  The aesthetics, the rhythms, and the sense of place are evident in both."  After 2 years of graduate school and about 20 cassette tapes of guitar riffs and song sketches, Tree View Drive was born.  It was definitely a change of scenery moving to Miami, and this difficulty of adjustment and transition was a catalyst for some of the lyrical themes in the songs.  Themes of personal instability, nostalgia, homesickness, love, loss, and relationships are apparent as well as broader themes of social/economic, workplace, and other contemporary issues.

Alfred Smith, bass

Alfred Smith is a musician from South Florida and is currently the bassist in Tree View Drive. He has been working on Strange Particles (another project) since 2001. He was raised from a Cajun-Cuban background and developed an ear for music at an early age listening to his grandmother and grandfather sing Cuban Folk duets by piano for early Saturday family get-togethers. While attending Florida International University he was a member of various prog-rock/metal bands playing bass but shortly after developed an interest in a wide variety of instruments particularly in the guitar and the sounds it could create looping various pedals. With the dawn of IDM music being spearheaded in the Miami underground, Alfred joined the ranks under 8(8) Symmetry while running an indie internet radio station named Radio Event Horizon. While studying Communications, he developed a background in Pro-Audio and recorded Strange Particles I using an array of virtual instruments while incorporating guitars and bass. Tracks were show-cased at Black Market Baby (hosted at SoHo Lounge, Miami) and the S.L.A.M. events (hosted at Power Studios, Miami). Since then he has continued to experiment with different sounds and instruments such as the thermin, banjo and keyboards.
